Carbon-Based Materials as Effective Adsorbents for the Removal of Pharmaceutical Compounds from Aqueous Solution

Antibiotics are emerging water pollutants that have attracted significant attention from the scientific community. generally released via hospital effluents, industrial production waste, animal manure, and irrigated agricultural land. Antibiotic residues can harm all living organisms, with most detrimental consequence being generation of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, commonly known as “superbugs.” Antimicrobial resistance is a concern to healthcare community it complicates treatment infections. Thus, development effective economical technologies remove antibiotics environment necessary. Adsorption promising technology owing its effectiveness high operational feasibility, carbon-based adsorbents primitive materials particularly suited for antibiotic adsorption. Herein, an overview current state pollution will be summarised, including adverse effects different challenges associated removal. The adsorption behaviours tetracycline (TC), quinolone, penicillin, macrolides on (i.e., activated carbon, carbon nanotubes, graphene-based materials) reviewed. interactions between adsorbents, mechanism, behaviour under conditions emphasised. In addition, limitations highlighted direct future research.
